There are lots of great things about summer, but having outdoor adventures is probably the best way to spend special family time with your children. Here are 10 easy ways to spend time outdoors with your kids this summer:
.) Take a hike at a conservation area, park, or beach. Sheep Pasture has many different trails available for people of all ages and abilities. Download our trail map here to plan your next trip.
.) Go puddle jumping. After a warm summer rain, jumping in puddles is an excellent way to spend an afternoon having fun.
.) Play field games. Playing fun and classic games like Frisbee, catch, and tag with your kids outside can make an average day into an adventure.
.) Catch fireflies. Summer evenings light up with the glow of these warm weather insects. Just be sure to let them go at the end of the night!
.) Eat outdoors. Bringing a picnic outside alway makes lunch or dinner taste better in the summer! Sheep Pasture is open from dawn to dusk each day, and the Foundation area is a beautiful spot to enjoy while you eat.
.) Take an art break. Bring paper and crayons, pencils, markers, or paint to your favorite outdoor location and let your family be inspired to create outdoor masterpieces together.
.) Take a bike ride. Whether you like to ride on trails or roads, bike riding as a family will give everyone a chance to get some exercise and have fun at the same time!
.) Take and share nature photos. Every phone has a camera nowadays, so taking photos as you walk through the natural world has never been easier. Take a walk through fields, trails, or woods, and stop periodically to let a different family member snap a photo each time. When you get home, share the photos as a slide show on your TV or computer, and let everyone tell the story they wanted to capture with their picture.
.) Join a nature hike. Many environmental organizations offer inexpensive, educational family events. Join the NRT's teacher/naturalists one evening each month for Science and Discovery Family Outings to learn more about a great local topic and enjoy a hike at the same time.
.) Watch the stars at night. Find a quiet, dark location, away from parking lots and bright lights to spend some time watching the stars in the sky. Lawn chairs or blankets make excellent places to sit, have a snack, and watch the stars as a family.
The time that you invest into outdoor activities are sure to be special memories for your children and for you. Take some time this year to plan a few special outings together and make 2015 a summer to remember!
