Sheep Pasture, NRT's flagship property, is open free to the public every day from dawn until dusk. The trails provide access for families to walk or run throughout the 154-acre property, and leashed pets are welcome, so even your pup can visit with you, too! The NRT's animals, including sheep, cow, goat, and chickens, are also available for people to see on site. Come enjoy the beauty of nature, snap some photos, and share the outdoors with your family.
Join us for NRT's Family Science Outings each month. People of all ages are welcome to join the NRT staff for a different nature-based hike an learning experience from 5:30- 7:00 pm on scheduled night. Topics range from learning about vernal pools to investigating bioluminescence in nature, and hikes are appropriate for visitors of any age. For more information on specific dates and upcoming topics, click here to visit the Family Outings page at nrtofeaston.org.
Make a nature journal with your family. You don't need to be an exceptional artist or a world-class scientist to have a great time documenting what you find in nature. Families can draw, write, photograph, or blog their experiences every week or month as they travel the outdoors. What should you write about? Anything! Did you see a great tree? Snap a pic! Was there a rabbit on the side of the trail? Write about it! Did you see the first green leaves of the year? Draw what you saw! Nature journaling is a fun way to record and remember the cycles of nature. By making dated entries into a notebook or even your own blog, you can see patterns and cycles in nature over time. It's a great family activity that requires very few materials to get started having fun. Use our Sheep Pasture Map to find your way around at NRT on your phone or tablet.
Take in an outdoor event or festival. The NRT hosts several events for visitors throughout the year, and all are designed to get families outside in the natural world.
- Have fun at NRT's Farm Festival on the first Saturday in May, where you can sit in the NRT tractor, make a birthday card for Simba the cow, hike the trails, do arts and crafts, and spend the day outside.
- The NRT's Fun Run is a family-friendly 5K event that is very supportive of all runners, including people just entering their first race. Events include a special kids-only race, where children of all ages are welcome to join a special 2.5K race all for them!
- NRT staff are hosting a variety of programs throughout the summer, including Family Science Outings and the NRT's 50th Anniversary Workshop series. All classes and outings are designed to celebrate and explore the natural world.
Visit other conservation properties, parks, and recreation areas to enjoy the diverse offerings each place has. Each and every natural area has something different to offer its guests, depending on its location and natural resources. Some spots offer outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, or picnicking, while others specialize in off-trail adventures for birdwatching, nature viewing, or just relaxation. Search the internet for locations near you that you can explore with your family this season. Some places to consider in the southeastern Massachusetts area include properties operated by Massachusetts DCR, the NRT of Easton, the DNRT, the Trustees, and local community organizations.
